This monitor has a nice panel for the money but lots of small annoying issues
Reviewed and updated 11/27, 12/5, 12/30/18, 10/19Update: 10/19 noticed this monitor is on sale for $180 today. Might as well update the review:I've had the monitor for almost a year, sticking through its quirks. Here's what I'll add:1. The sound can still be muffled but you can turn down the volume to have clear voices. Btw, the monitor sound is decent in the room, but like any other monitor speakers, upgrade to something else if you want enjoy better sound quality. Btw, the lowest setting before the sound is muted isn't quite whisper quiet so keep that in mind when playing music in a room where you don't want to disturb others.2. The monitor has survived be moved from room to room several times, so it's plastic build isn't as fragile as I thought. I still hate the stand as it's not the same as Dell's U series stands, which you can detach in 2 seconds. This is but a nitpick, as you don't expect easily detachable stands at this price and is merely an observation.3. Gaming is fine when I plug in my nintendo switch. No noticable issues except you have to manually set the picture boundaries from time to time.4. I connected a MacBook pro, windows laptops and a Chromebook to the monitor via thunderbolt/USB C to HDMI dongle. Works great at max resolution 60hz. Note that on a MacBook your native resolution can be higher than this monitor so don't expect that same type of sharpness. I do notice that colors don't look quite as good. A bit muted, but this is fine for coding. Some mentioned using the dp connection and calibrating the colors.5. Important thing: you can use this monitor with displayport and have 2 connected via daisychain, but this monitor can't be used as a passthrough as it only has a dp port. You need another monitor with dp out to accomplish this feat. This also means you can't Daisy chain 2 of these monitors together. You can still plug 2 of these to your computer but you can't take advantage of displayport's simpler cabling.Overall, at 180, I would add a star to my review. If the price goes back up past 220, take my caveats in my prior review before purchasing. The rest of this review is from December 2018:Updates on responsiveness on light gaming, HDMI cable quality, and speakers. This is a relatively new monitor that has only started selling a couple of months ago, and as of writing this review, there are no reviews online. The only info I see is Dell's product page for this monitor. This is my first S series monitor. I usually bought U series Dell monitors because they provided very sharp looking images, but my current needs include 27+ screen with higher than Full HD resolution, while coming in below $400. This ticked all the boxes. As an S series monitor, it is marketed towards the value conscious, business user who's priority is screen real estate for coding and spreadsheets, and less towards superior color accuracy, super thin bezels, and super brightness.Monitor build: to be honest, the bezels are a shiny somewhat cheap looking plastic. The bezels are approximately half an inch on all sides. Out ofnthe box, part of the enclosure popped out, partially exposing the panel itself. I was able to snap it back together. The base is metal and tilts forward and back only.So how is the picture? At first glance, the picture looks good. As good as my older Dell U2412 monitor. The size is great for browsing, text, coding, spreadsheets. Videos looked bright and not washed out like other monitors out of the box. Is this better than my other Dell U2415 monitor? No. But it's very good at what it does.Gaming: I didnt try any PC games but I did hook up my nintendo switch and played Smash Bros Ultimate. If you turned on game mode, most of the prepocessing is removed and you get a decently responsive monitor. Will it help you beat Pichu? Heck no (that character is currently too overpowered) but at least I can react to it's neutral 'A' better. Playing 1080p on a 1440p monitor wasn't so bad.Other parts of the monitor:Menus - Similar to other dell monitors but has contextual balloons this time to make your selections clearer. Serviceable navigation.Speakers, in one word, ok. Lyrics and songs are tinny and muffled. If you want the sound to not sound as terrible, turn off the "MaxxAudio" setting in the menu. The sound will have less bass and sound will be a bit lower, but voices are definitely clearer. Whej playing movies, my picture and sound cut out when sound is played at max volume, which leads to me to believe the speakers may not be getting all the power it needs to operate normally.Refresh rate issue - The resolution + refresh rate is supposedly 2560x1440@75hz. On Windows 10 and Intel and Nvidia graphics adapters, when I cranked it to the max, the monitor was losing the image every 5 seconds. I was going to send it back when I tried 2560x1440@60hz instead. That fixed my issue. I did not have this issue using Ubuntu 18.04.Other observations:- It's a bit sensitive if you move the monitor while it is on. You can momentarily lose the picture. Loose hdmi connection?- The included HDMI cable sucks. When you plug it into an hdmi port, it's a little loose. Even worse, one of the ends came off after a month.May 2022 - small update. I don't use the speakers but they are exhibiting large popping noises every minute for a while, then ago away. Not sure why this is happening as I have not touched this monitor in years. Despite this. I am upgrading the long term review to 4 stars as I use this monitor 10+hrs on weekdays and it is a great performer for the cost. Hopefully some tweaks (pull the cord wait a few min) will help eliminate the speaker pops.

I feel like this is a great monitor for productivity and not necessarily for gaming, or at least with gaming as a secondary usage scenario.

Nevertheless, 32” of screen space is amazing for desk work, 1440p resolution is a plus, colours are pretty good after some calibration and viewing angles are good but nothing exceptional. Overall, for the price I paid at the time (approx. 250$ CAD+taxes), I think this is a great monitor.

I got one of these monitors last October and eventually I did want a second monitor, but with my OCD it has to be the same, and for the longest time I couldn’t find another Dell S3219D. Eventually I saw a used - very good one off amazon last week 1/2, immediately ordered it for $344 Canadian. I must say, even though it didn’t come in its original box, the monitor it’s self is brand new, looks like it’s never even been used and no dead pixels! So I’m glad to finally have dual S3219Ds running on my setup!
